Help From Above

Some of the most dreaded words in the English language for students are, “Back to School.” Well, as much as the thought is disdained, the month of August signals this “dreaded” reality. And this year is an even earlier start. Despite these words of dread, it is also an opportunity for God to do some wonderful things in your life. In John 8:23 Jesus said,

“You are from beneath; I am from above: you are of this world; I am not of this world.”

This verse reminded me of a story I read in one of David Jeremiah’s Turning Point devotions. Last year a woman was hiking with her dog near Horsetail Falls in California’s El Dorado National Forest. It is said that this area is deceptively difficult in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Unfortunately, the woman became trapped. At the moment of panic, help came from above. A California Highway Patrol helicopter spotted the woman and her dog. Two search and rescue workers descended by ropes and were soon on the ground beside the pair. The workers helped get them back to safety.

Help is always available from above, but unfortunately, we must be in a panic or some type of distress to be yielded to His intervention. The Bible says,

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” (James 1:17).

Clearly understood for believer is that the best and most perfect gift ever given was the Lord Jesus Christ, Who came from above to stand beside us. We also have Bible that has come to us from above along with the Holy Spirit Who has come down to indwell us.

As we enter into this new month, let us not fall prey to the things we dread, but see them as an opportunity for God, Who is above all our circumstances, to show Himself powerfully strong in our lives. We can be assured that God is always faithful to reach down to us in our darkest times to be with us and bring comfort. Help is available from above.

Seek Him!
